Brown Penny

I whispered "I am too young,"
And then, "I am old enough";
Wherefore I threw a penny
To find out if I might love.
"Go and love, go and love, young man,
If the lady be young and fair."
Ah, penny, brown penny, brown penny,
I am looped in the loops of her hair.

O love is the crooked thing,
There is nobody wise enough,
To find out all that is in it,
For he would be thinking of love,
Till the stars had run away,
And the shadows eaten the moon.
Ah, penny, brown penny, brown penny,
One cannot begin it too soon.

Hours Upon Hours

You are welcome for the feeling of touch upon your skin
Hands caressing your brow, lips across your cheek
You are welcome for opening your heart and broadening your mind
Seeing others in a whole new light, without judgment and hate
You are welcome for the space to be who you are
Have your own preferences, say, do and wear what you want
You are welcome for the encouragement to make new friends
To enrich your life with the camaraderie of men

You are welcome for the silence you didn’t have to fill
Because all that you are was always enough
You are welcome for being taught how to kiss
Softly, slowly, for hours upon hours
You are welcome for the trust emplaced in your care
The belief that you were honorable, loyal and good
You are welcome for the forgiveness that was shown to you
For breaking the heart of a girl who was true

You are welcome for the laughter, the friendship, the advice
The faith and encouragement for your talents and gifts
You are welcome for the patience for you to mature
Grow, change and become the man you always wanted to be
You are welcome for the tenderness tendered upon you
Meant to heal the places you’d hidden away
You are welcome for the life I sacrificed for you
The goals and dreams I’ll never get to pursue

You are welcome for a love that brought you back to life
For which the loss of my soul was the ultimate price
