Brown Penny

I whispered "I am too young,"
And then, "I am old enough";
Wherefore I threw a penny
To find out if I might love.
"Go and love, go and love, young man,
If the lady be young and fair."
Ah, penny, brown penny, brown penny,
I am looped in the loops of her hair.

O love is the crooked thing,
There is nobody wise enough,
To find out all that is in it,
For he would be thinking of love,
Till the stars had run away,
And the shadows eaten the moon.
Ah, penny, brown penny, brown penny,
One cannot begin it too soon.

What is Held Dear in the Heart

If you had to leave

Did you have to take my dreams

If you had to leave
Did you have to change our stories

Did you have to minimize our love
The gifts and sacrifices so freely given
Forgotten and unappreciated

What is held dear in the heart
Is all that matters

What is held dear in the heart
Is all that is seen and felt by others

Your dignity and integrity
Come from what is held in your heart

How you treat other people
Comes from what is held in your heart

The stories matter
The truth matters
The love matters

It deserves to be recognized
And remembered
Cherished for the wondrous gift it is

It may never come your way again
You may go to your grave
Craving its delicate embrace

You blossomed in that embrace
Grew into a new person
Found your self again

You were not there alone
Someone was by your side
Leading you all the way

You had been neglected
Your heart had closed down
Your body starved for touch

Tenderness opened your heart
Touch brought you back to life
Truth released your soul

Tenderness matters
Touch matters
Truth matters

What is held dear in your heart?
